The atomic bomb was dropped above Nagasaki at 500 meters. The hypocenter is the place above the earth where a bomb goes off. One hundred forty nine thousand people were killed or injured.

This stone monument marks the hypocenter.

It is said that folding 1,000 paper cranes brings true a wish. 1,000 folded cranes is a symbol of the wish for peace around the world.

These are some of the folded cranes that were left in Nagasaki in 1998.

One day a huge paper crane was left at the hypocenter. This picture shows the tail, the monument, and many folded cranes.

On the huge crane were messages of peace in English and Japanese.
